This is what I'm trying to say

http://mhambi.com/2010/02/ninja-is-the-new-james-phillips/

I totally dig the SA identity debate. The article's cape coloured gangsta rap angle is one I hadn't thought of, but it's obvious.

Seeing that the only reason that Die Antwoord are getting so much local press on sites like these is that they got so many hits from America, doesn't that invalidate the premise?

Snotkop is the new James Phillips.

I agree, Paul.

Philimon, I get what you are saying but i still think you're wrong.

I used to love WWF(WWE) wrestling, even though i knew it was faked. I still got the joke!

Also, something else you said in a previous comment bothered me - do you really think Corne and Twakkie are funny? Seriously?

Ok one last time, has anyone else seen Die Antwoord play live in front of tons of Afrikaans-speaking people? Just because their recent international attention is getting lots of coverage here doesn't mean they don't already have a large local fan base.

and, AND! Why would you believe that South Africa's large white working class is somehow more enlightened than equivalent sectors of society in other countries? I promise you okes from Vereeniging aspire to zefness, and worship Die Antwoord's preaching about how cool being zef is. For them there is no flippin joke.

But he's no James Phillips. He's just an ageing english white upper-middle class guy trying to get in on the MK revolution. Whereas Vokof influenced a subculture, this is just a novelty act with good production value. Ironically its the interest from foreign bloggers that's creating this hype which goes against the premise of the article.

Ya I agree he's no james phillips. I disagree that there was no local hype prior to the international attention. dude these guys have been huge locally for over a year now at least.

Huge locally among his fans, but largely ignored by everyone else until it hit the blogosphere (hate that word).
